Long had the doctor worked in Mexico City tending to the sick and dying before his involvement with Sangreal. His efforts were purely experience. He watched the city grow over the last 40 years into the megalopolis that it is now. His chosen career was one paid for by his rich parents who sent him to Italy and Germany to study medicine. Romero always had an interest in the body and what drove it. As he grew older, the church seemed to answer less and less of his questions, and his experiments with pets, abandoned and dead animals only provoked more questions for his inquisitive mind.
He spent fifteen years in Milan with alternating trips to Berlin during the seventies. For what was intended to be a short trip only for the skills required establishing himself in Mexico under his proud status-minded parents turned into a lengthy lifestyle. It was there he met Emmanuel Marocci and together discovered secrets of the human body. Cadavers could be purchased and in secret they both carried out medical explorations. Emmanuel opened doors for Romero that he had never contemplated. Late one evening Romero was taken to an underground chamber where he watched Emmanuel carve up a living person. After it was finished, from the shadows stepped those watching and a new victim was brought forward and Romero given a scalpel.
Initiation into the lore of death was a lengthy period, one in which Romero excelled and competed with others. His fixation drove him and he hunted death at every street corner… watching and sometimes initiating accidents. He learned much from Emmanuel about the transmigration of the soul and the inevitable cleansing that followed. The living dead he studied, created and controlled, he watched through windows a soul's path, he summoned and conversed with those who lord of the lands of the dead and Inferno, learning how to travel there. He also learned of Sangreal who offered much in the ways of Inferno and death and he took to the Razide with little problem. As tension grew in Italy within the sect devoted to the Razide, Romero took his time to return to Mexico City and be closer to this Razide nearing God hood.
Emmanuel lost a strong ally, and resentment instantly grew between them, but Romero cared little for his mentor and sought out Sangreal who welcomed him with… open arms. Romero joined the coterie of successful death practitioners and participated in every, and any, ritual to Sangreal. His parents now dead, Romero had inherited an estate and wealth which he used to establish a clinic deep within the slums of Mexico City - where a steady source of sacrifice and victims presented themselves to him.
Over the next twenty years, Romero was a faithful servant, and rose among the death conjurers in Mexico who stalwartly stood beside the Razide and Amine. Romero grew old as Amine prospered young, as Sangreal's right hand - a position Romero could never have, something he resented. There was a limit to his success, his constant search for higher goals and discoveries, and he hated this obstacle. So it was fortuitous that Sangreal chose him for a most special task; to uncover the god bundle of Mictantecuhtli. Amine presented him with an ancient Maya codex containing the ritual for discovery of the hidden god bundle. All he needed was to work with the Ciccatri and harvest sacrifice and bones enough for the ritual, among other things. Romero, seeing it as another task acquiesced and to aid matters prescribed a drug to catch the unfortunates while he sought a specific crystal skull needed for the ossuary completion. The sacrifice of 1000 individuals required - heart and bones… heart for Sangreal and the bones for the Ossuary.
Since the Ciccatri stayed well away from humanity, Romero had them bring back a prostitute - someone not missed - and while she slept and hallucinated he fused her dream essence into the Ossuary, made of her bones still wet with blood and flesh not properly scraped. Through the continual sacrifice and pain of others brought in by newly recruited prostitutes, Romero increased the power of the Chimera, needed for the expenditure of the spell to locate the god bundle of Mictantecuhtli. The more he researched and witnessed the Chimera growing, the more he realized he could transcend the limitations Amine represented. With the expenditure of the Chimera he could uncover the god bundle, recover it and escape into the Chimera's drea. There he would unravel the bundle and slip on the skin of Mictantecuhtli and become the god removed.
appearance: Romero is an aging man of sixty plus years. Always smiling and dressed immacutely, he fits the demeanor of an extremely successful businessman. He walks strong and fit, his health envious for someone of his advanced age. He wears his glasses low and studies people and listens to their complaints.
personality: Friendly, Romero always has a ready ear for any problems others may have, only offering opinion where asked, but pondering others' requests with sincerity and honesty. In truth Romero uses his position to get close to victims and lure them into a false sense of security. Although this is never shown until he has them in a place where screams cannot be heard. Cold, he knows the boundaries of death. He enjoys watching the suffering and pain of others - partly why his practice is in such a disease-ridden place. His staff think highly of him and are well-paid.
game-mastering hints: You are everyone's friend if they want you to be. You do not fawn over others, but you are there when they need someone and then you take advantage of that. You care little for family or human goals. They are simply there to be processed in whatever manner you can think of… to see the results of death.
plot points: Romero still needs the crystal skull which is the focus of the Ossuary from which the Chimera will be channeled and is maintaining control over the Chimera. The Ciccatri wish to see him dead and intend to do so once he has located the god bundle, Sangreal permitting or not. Surprisingly for all of Romero's good work at his clinic, there is a 90% fatality rate - chalked up to the disease and pollution. Romero works closely with another Death Conjurer under Sangreal whose façade of work is an undertaker. Families often accept Romero's assurance of this man and the caskets are usually closed.
